Two of my best friends and mentors – Ryan Shanahan and Funk Roberts – sit down and talk about the steps to becoming a YouTube celebrity, how Funk got into the best shape of his life in his 40’s, Funk’s favourite fat burning breakfast, and much more.
Funk Roberts is a former Professional Beach Volleyball player turned Fitness trainer. With over 30 years of training, expertise, research and experience, he is an online fat loss expert who has helped thousands of people worldwide burn unwanted fat while building lean muscle through his website, videos, articles, media and fitness products.
All 3 of our paths crossed in 2007 and since then our lives have been forever changed. I can honestly say that I knew both of them before they became famous! Both Ryan and Funk have been an incredible inspiration to me, have always believed in me, and motivated me to always strive to be a greater athlete and designer.
Ryan and I met at our neighborhood gym – System Fitness back in the summer of 2005 (you can hear more about the story on Ryan’s interview with me here) and I believe it was a couple of years later that I met Funk Roberts for the first time, when Ryan brought him out to be a guest trainer at the bootcamp he was running by the beach.
Being an ex professional volleyball player, Funk contributed an element plyometrics to the our bootcamp. I remember this guy had huge pipes and the most impressive jumps I’d ever seen. He used to and still can jump over picnic benches and fences! Thanks to those killer plyometric drills, it has given me explosive power on and off the volleyball court.
At the time, Funk was just getting started on building his business and I was doing some freelance design work for Ryan. Shortly after seeing my work, Funk had also hired me to do some design work for him. I even got to contribute some articles and kettlebell workout moves to his fitness blog, and one summer we joined forces and taught a bootcamp together.
Since those boot camp days, I’ve done several design projects with both of them. For Ryan, I’ve designed his website, fitness dvd covers, kettlebell ebooks, promotional flyers, all the packaging, disc artwork, and nutrition ebook design for KettleWorx, a 6 week body transformation program with kettlebells which I am still the lead testimonial for, and the wordmark for his new online training system Ryan Raw. For Funk, I designed all his logos, web graphics, ebooks, and some sales pages for the many fitness programs he has released which include: 6 Week Jump Training Program, Free 4 Week Spartan Training System Challenge, Funk Holiday Fitness Survival Kit, Spartan Training System 10 Week Fat Loss Program, Elite Strength and Conditioning for MMA Athletes, Funk 7 Day Express Fat Burn Package, and his soon to be released 50 Shades of Burpees program.
