180 degrees, baby!!

By Estella in broken clavicle, rehabilitation with 4 comments

Week 9, Day 6: After a full week of doing isometrics, working out on the elliptical trainer and my first 3 mile run, I am super pumped about getting a bit more aggressive with the training, now that the shoulder’s a lot more stable and feeling good. Today I went in to see Ian, my athletic therapist for another MAT session. Going in, I was able to move my arm about 175 degrees but whenever I lifted my arm overhead I had problems keeping my elbow from coming out to the side. After an hour of treatment, not only was I able to move my arm a full 180 degrees, but I was also able to keep it straight when reaching overhead so that the side of my arm would touch my ear. To say the effects of Muscle Activation Techniques are incredible and far reaching is an understatement. I’m a believer!

Time to party~

    That’s such amazing progress!! You go giirl! I broke my collarbone 4 weeks ago and have been trying to find a good athletic therapist. I’ve done the physio at the hospital, seen a chiro and haven’t really seen too much progress. Yours sounds like he can work magic – where do you go for your MAT treatments?

    Hey.. Great to read your story.. I am in week 12 of non union and my ortho is trying to discourage me from having surgery with the warning of a huge scar.. I too am a very active person and Im not too fussed about the scar if it means returning to normal life. Also I am a hairstylist so its really important I make the right choices and have it fixed properly. Can you please post a pic of the scar so I know what im in for..?? Im really annoyed doctors dont warn you of the possible complications of collarbone fractures..

    @Dana
    Hey Dana, I was really disappointed with my docs too. As my athletic therapist once told me – if it hasn’t formed a hard callus in 7+ weeks, you’re better off having it repaired in order to speed recovery, and ensure that it heals properly so you can continue with sports, and have an aesthetically pleasing collar bone. The scar really isn’t that bad. Way better than having a shortened clavicle and a huge bump. I’ll try and post a pic of it soon 😉

    Hi Estella,

    I’ve been reading your blog over the past week that I have similarly injured (similar break of my left clavicle). My displaced bone is causing a large lump and I am considering surgery. I am not sure if the plate will look worse than the lump, because I have heard that it is sometimes visible under the skin. I am a guy, so the scar is not a big issue to me. I am interested in seeing a picture also. Additionally I would like to know how you were referred to this doctor because so far my experiences with the orthopedic surgeon I’ve seen has been scary and discouraging.

    Thank you!

    Brad

About Stronger than Unbroken

Stronger than Unbroken is a personal blog I started to show that true strength comes from within. It is both a physical and mental battle. Strength comes from every obstacle and personal goal I have had to overcome. With each experience, comes confidence and the drive to become better and stronger than when I first started.
